Chapter 20

When Jacob left the cafe, his adrenaline was high, so he decided to stop by the dojo for a class to help him expel the extra energy. As he entered the building, he was met by his sensei and owner of the school, Master Morai.

“Jacob! You’re just in time! Eric isn’t able to come in to teach the 6:30 class. You can sub for him, yes?” Master Morai asked as he walked away.

Shaking his head and smiling, Jacob went into the locker room to get into his gear. The 6:30 class was mostly advanced-level students of varying ages. Jacob would rather have joined in on the class, but he was used to being put off guard by the sensei.

After a successful session and still riding the excitement from his date, Jacob showered, said goodbye to Master Morai, and headed home. The night was cloudy and windy but still offered the peaceful backdrop that Jacob needed to unwind.

He thought about Yara and her family. He felt a sense of pride that Yara had talked him up to her father, who seemed to share the same values as Mr. Fratelli, and therefore, accepted Jacob as worthy enough to even keep talking to his daughter. He didn’t know if Yara intended to take it further, but he had a feeling they would be able to form a special bond—the foundations of which he believed had developed that evening with the approval of her father.

As Jacob reached the pond that was only a couple of blocks from home, he was reminded of his last interaction with the Fratellis. The results of the conversation had left much to desire in the way of answers, and he didn’t know what to expect when he walked through the door. Will they still be in their room? Will they yell at me or tell me I need help? Each step brought different but equally stressful scenarios. However, what he saw just as the house came into view greatly surpassed all of his worries about confronting the Fratellis: the familiar black car was parked in front of the home. Even more worrisome, the car was empty, leaving Jacob to assume that its occupant was inside his home, talking to the Fratellis.

Jacob’s stride quickened out of nervousness. As he reached the car, he placed his hand on the hood and found it to be cold, which told him Burns had been there for a while. He took a deep breath and entered the house.

No one was in the living room, but he could hear voices in the dining room that hushed when they heard the front door close. Jacob’s mind was sprinting from thought to thought as he slowly edged to meet with the inevitable unknown.

When he rounded the corner, Jacob saw the Fratellis on one side of the table in their usual spots and Burns on the other, accompanied by Caleb. They all shared the same expression of sadness as they turned to look at him collectively. Mr.
